Capture

Art used to be a live performance.

Then three machines learned to catch it. The phonograph, the radio, and the film camera turned sound and motion into things you could own, ship, and replay.

The
Phonograph

The shift

Before Edison's tinfoil cylinder, music existed in only two states, live or written on paper. Recording turned a performance into something you could own, copy, ship, and replay. Every technology that follows is a variation on this one idea.

Production

The take was born. A performance was no longer judged only in the room, but forever, on playback. Musicians learned to play to the machine.

Consumption

Music detached from the event and from the musician. You could hear a Caruso aria in a parlor in Ohio with no orchestra present. The record, not the concert, became how most people met most music.

Economics

It built the recording industry and made the record the main music product for roughly a century. It also triggered the first great rights fight, composers and publishers against a machine that copied them without paying. By the 1920s, Berliner's flat, mass-pressable disc had beaten Edison's cylinder and set the template for every physical format that followed.

You could finally buy a performance and take it home.

Radio
Broadcasting

The shift

Recording made music a product. Radio made it free. From the early 1920s, a single performance reached millions of homes at once, at no cost to the listener.

Consumption

Radio created the mass audience and the modern hit. A song could go national in weeks. It also created programming, someone choosing what you heard and when, the first gatekeeper of the kind an algorithm now automates.

Production

Performers now played for an invisible crowd and for a microphone that rewarded intimacy over projection. Radio locked in the three-minute song, cut to fit rotation and ad breaks.

Economics

Music money split in two, records you buy and broadcasts you get free but pay for through ads. That free tier is the direct ancestor of ad-supported Spotify and YouTube. The industry feared radio would kill sales. Instead it became the best way to promote records, a pattern that returns with MTV, YouTube, and streaming.

Radio made music free. Everyone has been arguing about the bill ever since.

Motion-
Picture Film

The shift

Edison's Kinetoscope and the Lumière brothers' Cinématographe did for the moving image what the phonograph did for sound. A fleeting event became something you could reproduce and ship.

Production

A new art form arrived with its own grammar and no prior equivalent, editing, the close-up, the cut, and montage. Méliès found the trick effect. Griffith and the Soviet filmmakers found montage.

Consumption

Mass spectacle, and the cinema as a place to gather. One actor could now be seen by tens of millions of people, the same in every theater.

Economics

The studio system, the star system, and the box office. This became the template for the whole audiovisual industry that television, VHS, and streaming would each inherit.

One performance could now reach millions, identical every time.

The
Electric Age

Electricity got inside the art itself.

The talkies welded sound to image. The microphone invented intimacy. Magnetic tape turned the studio into an instrument.

The
Talkies

The shift

For about thirty years, film was silent, accompanied live by a pianist or an orchestra. "The Jazz Singer" (1927) changed that with Vitaphone, a sound-on-disc system that played a synchronized record alongside the picture. Sound-on-film, with the audio printed on the strip itself, soon took over as the standard.

Production

It upended the craft overnight. Silent stars with the wrong voice vanished. Early microphones pinned cameras in place until boom mics freed them again. Dialogue, sound design, and the film score, a huge new home for composers, all arrived at once.

Consumption

Film became the century's dominant mass medium. It also erased a large part of the live-music economy. The theater orchestras and pianists who had accompanied silent film were suddenly out of work, one of the first mass displacements of skilled creative workers by a machine.

Film learned to talk. Overnight, an entire profession went silent.

The
Microphone

The shift

Electrical recording and the condenser microphone changed more than fidelity. They changed how people sing and play. Closeness started to beat volume.

Production

Before the mic, a singer needed power to fill a hall. The mic rewarded the opposite, closeness, breath, a whisper. It created crooning, from Crosby to Sinatra, a style physically impossible without amplification. The electric guitar did the same for instruments and opened the door to blues, rock, and everything downstream.

Consumption

The PA system created the modern large-scale concert. Amplification is the reason 80,000 people can hear a single show.

The point

The change was aesthetic, not just technical. The whole sound of twentieth-century pop, an intimate voice riding over an amplified band, comes from the microphone.

The microphone made the whisper more powerful than the belt.

Magnetic
Tape

The shift

German Magnetophon tape reached America after the war, through Ampex and its backer Bing Crosby, who wanted to pre-record his radio show. Tape did two revolutionary things.

Editing

You could cut and splice. A recording no longer had to be one continuous take. The best fragments of many takes could be joined together, and the record became a built object rather than a captured moment.

Multitracking

Les Paul, then the industry, learned to record parts separately and layer them. Producers like George Martin, Phil Spector, and Brian Wilson became authors in their own right. "Sgt. Pepper's" (1967) could never be played live as recorded. It exists only as a tape construction.

The split

This is where production and performance separated for good. Everything from "Pet Sounds" to modern pop's comped, tuned, layered vocals traces back to it.

The studio became an instrument, not just a room with microphones.

The
Broadcast Home

First the screen moved into the living room. Then the living room learned to record.

Television built the attention economy. The VCR handed the schedule to the audience.

Tele-
vision

The shift

Television fused radio's free mass distribution with film's moving image and piped the result into the living room.

Consumption

It became the central hearth of mid-century culture and the machine that turned music into something you watch, from variety shows and Elvis on Ed Sullivan through to MTV. Seeing a star became inseparable from hearing one.

Production

New formats arrived, the broadcast performance and later the music-television clip, along with an endless demand for advertising-friendly content.

Economics

The broadcast-and-advertising model ran at full scale, built on one simple idea, that the audience's attention is the product being sold. That is the direct forerunner of the attention economy YouTube and TikTok run on today.

For thirty years, a whole country watched the same thing at the same time.

The
VCR

Time-shifting

Betamax (1975) and VHS (1976 to 1977) put a recorder in the home. You could record a broadcast and watch it later, and the schedule lost its grip. This is the seed the DVR and then streaming would grow.

Owning video

For the first time, you could own a copy of a film and rewatch it. The rental store and the sell-through market were born, and together they eventually rivaled the box office.

The camcorder

Ordinary people could shoot and keep moving images of their own lives. Home video, and later the look of amateur footage, entered the culture.

The viewer, not the network, now decided when the show started.

Sound
Becomes Data

Synthesizers built sound from nothing. Samplers turned any noise into a keyboard. Software swallowed the studio whole.

As data, sound could be copied perfectly, edited infinitely, and moved anywhere in seconds.

The
Synthesizer

Production

The synthesizer generated sound from scratch and detached the idea of an instrument from any vibrating object. Wendy Carlos proved it could be serious. Kraftwerk, disco, and all of dance music are built on it. The Roland TR-808 (1980) and TR-909 (1983) gave hip-hop and techno their foundational sounds, and their failure to sound like real drums became a defining aesthetic.

Culture

Whole genres are unthinkable without synthesis, and most modern pop and hip-hop production sits on top of it. It also shrank the band. One person with a synth, and later a laptop, could build a full arrangement alone.

Musicians started playing sounds that had never existed in nature.

Sampling
& MIDI

Sampling

The Fairlight CMI (1979) and the cheaper samplers after it let you record any sound and replay it at any pitch. It created hip-hop's method of building new music from fragments of old records, and it opened a second copyright war, the sample-clearance era of De La Soul and Biz Markie.

MIDI, 1983

A universal standard let synths, drum machines, samplers, and computers talk to each other. Notes became editable data on a grid, the normal way to compose. MIDI is why a producer can rearrange, requantize, and re-voice a track without replaying a note.

The premise

Sound became information. Once it is data, it can be copied perfectly, edited infinitely, and moved over a network. That premise sets up everything that follows.

Any sound ever recorded was now raw material for a new one.

The CD
& the DAW

The shift

The compact disc (1982) delivered music as a perfect digital copy and briefly became the industry's most profitable format ever. Recorded-music revenue peaked near $22 billion in 1999, almost all of it physical, per IFPI, a level it would not reach again until 2023. But the deeper change was software.

Audio

The digital audio workstation, Pro Tools and its rivals, moved recording, editing, mixing, and effects into a computer. Studios that once cost millions collapsed into a laptop, and the bedroom producer became a real economic force.

Video

Non-linear editing, from Avid to Final Cut and Premiere, did the same for film and TV. Combined with CGI in "Jurassic Park" and "Toy Story," the digital toolchain rebuilt filmmaking. By the 2010s, a feature could be finished entirely in software.

Net effect

The means of production went from institutional and expensive to personal and cheap. That is the precondition for the creator explosion the internet was about to distribute.

The million-dollar studio collapsed into a laptop.

Auto-
Tune

The shift

Auto-Tune came out of oil exploration, where Andy Hildebrand used seismic-data math to map the ground, then turned it on the human voice. Antares shipped it in 1997 as an invisible fix. Then Cher's "Believe" (1998) pushed the retune speed to its limit, and the robotic artifact became the point.

Production

It decoupled vocal pitch from vocal ability. Anyone could sing in tune, and the extreme setting became an instrument and a genre marker. Layered on the DAW, it made the flawless tuned vocal the default sound of pop and opened a melodic style in hip-hop, from T-Pain to Future.

Culture

It split the room. Jay-Z's "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" (2009) changed nothing. The tool was already everywhere, and nearly every pop and rap vocal since 2010 sits pitch-perfect because of it.

A tool built to hide mistakes became the sound of a generation.

The
Network

Distribution fell to zero, and the schedule finally died.

The whole apparatus, the studio, the cinema, the record store, the broadcast tower, folded into a slab of glass in your pocket.

The
DVR

Consumption

TiVo and ReplayTV took time-shifting off tape. Pause live TV, auto-record a series, skip the ads with one button. It broke the schedule for good, and it broke the advertising model. It trained a generation to expect what they want, when they want, with no ads, the exact expectation streaming would later sell back as a subscription.

Economics

Value drained out of the timeslot and into the show itself. Advertising began its migration toward product placement and, eventually, targeted digital ads a viewer cannot skip.

The bridge

The DVR connects VHS time-shifting to streaming on demand. It is the moment on-demand viewing was born, and Netflix simply delivered the same promise over the internet a decade later.

Television lost the one power it had left: deciding when you watched.

The
Internet

MP3 & Napster, 1999

Compression plus peer-to-peer made distribution free and impossible to control. Recorded-music revenue fell by around 40% over the next fifteen years, bottoming out near $13 billion in 2014, and the album unbundled into songs. Suing Napster, then suing its own customers, is the industry's classic case of fighting the future.

iTunes, 2003

The iTunes Store legalized the download and the 99-cent single, briefly restoring paid demand while locking in the unbundling.

YouTube, 2005

Free hosting plus a browser made anyone a global broadcaster. It merged music, video, amateur, and professional into one feed and created a creator class that needs no studio or label, radio's old bargain reborn as an ad-supported free tier.

Streaming, 2008

The decisive shift from owning copies to reaching everything. Per IFPI's 2026 report, streaming is close to 70% of global recorded-music revenue, about $22 billion of a record $31.7 billion in 2025, with roughly 837 million paying subscribers and eleven straight years of growth. The catch is that value moved to the platform, and the algorithm reshaped songwriting toward front-loaded hooks, shorter tracks, and skip-proof intros.

TikTok, 2018

The algorithmic feed became the main tastemaker and hit-maker for music, and the 15-second fragment became a unit of composition in its own right.

Once a song became a file, copying it cost nothing. That broke everything.

The
Smartphone

Production

The iPhone put a camera, a studio, an editing suite, and the internet in one pocket. HD and then 4K cameras made everyone a potential filmmaker, and music apps made everyone a potential producer. Features have been shot on iPhones, including "Tangerine" and "Unsane," and tracks are made start to finish on phones. The barrier to professional content dropped to zero.

Consumption

The phone is now how most people meet almost all music and video, mobile, vertical, on-demand, and algorithmic. It made streaming and YouTube ubiquitous, and TikTok is smartphone-native end to end, shot, cut, watched, and shared on the same object.

Making it, sharing it, and watching it became the same act, on the same device.
